This weekend has been one where pro wrestling titles can change as quickly as signing a contract. On Friday, there was WWE's Cody Rhodes and winning the WWE Championship over Drew McIntyre at a Smackdown show.
Sunday, in Southeast Asia, a promotion that this fan follows greatly in Filipino Pro Wrestling, an independent company, there was a title change there. Kushida, of WWE and NJPW fame, won the FPW Championship (Philippines) in a winner-take-all match. He now has two titles in the FPW and Major League Wrestling (MLW) belts.
It's not uncommon when a championship title is won by someone outside the promotion, especially in continents as Asia and South America. Take the GeneraXion Lucha Libre (Peru) National Title for example.
Currently, the title is held by Luz Camara Andrew, a wrestler with WAR Ecuador in Quito. Andrew won the vacated title in a Triple Threat Match in the Rumble show this past January. The previous title holder, Ultimo Tigre suffered an injury and forfeited the title.
Getting back to the GLL National Title, there is a great importance to the belt. First off, the title is one of the foundations to GLL Peru. The belt has been defended in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Argentina. The last wrestler from Peru to hold the title (per Cagematch) is Rafael de Salamanca in 2018. The title was vacated.
As some of the fans remember, there was a tournament at the GLL Cruzado Fuego show in March 2020 to decide a new champion. There were five singles matches with 10 wrestlers. The winners would face each other in a five way match to decide the champion. Ajayu, who wrestles a bit for Jach'a Pacha Pro Wrestling in Bolivia was the eventual champion. Following the win, the world was affected badly with the Covid pandemic. It wouldn't be until early 2022 when GLL Peru would be able to have regular shows again.
Fast forward to today, LCA has the belt but this blogger believes that he has yet to defend it. He did wrestle at WAR's last show in a tag match with Falcon.
This blogger is not pushing for a match. However, it will be interesting to see when he will put up the title. GLL Peru's Ramses Darkstrike challenged him in a promo recently. Let's see if the challenge is accepted and where the match will be held. No question, this blogger believes it will be a very good one!
